VACANCY
OUTREACH CURATOR
Job Description
Applications close August 22nd
Art is for everyone - but not everyone can get to the gallery.
We’re looking for someone to flip the script on traditional gallery work. As our Outreach Curator, you’ll take art experiences into the community - into schools, rural halls, libraries, and wherever people gather. This is a 12-month fixed-term role (0.8 FTE), and it’s all about meeting people where they are.
You’ll be part curator, part community weaver, part producer. You'll work closely with our team at Invercargill Public Art Gallery / He Waka Tuia, but your real office will be the roads, paddocks, and neighbourhoods of our region.
Your mission?
To create joyful, meaningful, and inclusive exhibitions and programmes outside of the gallery. To build strong relationships with schools, community groups, iwi, and whānau. To listen deeply, co-create generously, and help people see art as something for them.
This pilot role is a chance to test new approaches - so we’re open to experimentation. Maybe your background is in education, public programming, theatre, or community arts. Maybe you’ve run workshops in rural townships or built pop-ups. Whatever your path, you’ll be someone who knows how to connect with people and make things happen.
You’ll need to be organised, adaptable, culturally responsive, and ready to jump in the car (driver’s licence essential). A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori is a must - we’re committed to doing this work in partnership.
Sound like you?
